  • Elected to seven four-year terms as a Superior Court Judge in Pierce County, serving the community for 28 years.

  • Twice elected Presiding Judge, serving four years in the Court’s top leadership role.

  • Served nine additional years on the Court’s Executive Committee, giving him unmatched experience in court administration and long-term planning.

  • Worked closely with county leaders, including the Executive, Council, Sheriff, Jail, Assigned Counsel, and Prosecutor’s Office to improve coordination across the justice system.

  • Served four years on the Washington State Board for Judicial Administration.

  • Served five years on the Board of the Washington State Superior Court Judges’ Association, including as Treasurer.

  • Participated in hundreds of civil and criminal trials, making difficult legal decisions with fairness, independence, and sound judgement.

Expertise in Criminal Justice Management

 

Bryan closely monitored criminal case performance and system efficiency throughout his judicial career. In 2019, he was selected to join a delegation to a national conference hosted by the National Center for State Courts, recognizing some of the country’s most effective criminal case management systems.

His experience gives him a deep understanding of how prosecutorial decisions affect courts, public safety, victims, defendants, and the broader community.

While working alongside his colleagues, Bryan was instrumental in writing and representing Bill 5165, which gives Superior Court Commissioners more authority to handle certain legal matters.

The bill's passage resulted in more efficient management of courtrooms and helped to reduce case backlogs.

Private Practice

 

Before being elected to the bench, Bryan Chushcoff spent 19 years in private practice as a self-employed attorney in Tacoma. He successfully managed his own law practice, met payroll, and represented clients facing a wide range of civil and criminal legal matters.

 

Working directly with people from diverse economic, cultural, and personal backgrounds gave Bryan firsthand insight into the real-world challenges individuals and families face when navigating the legal system.
